Indian political leader, the first and the only governor-general of independent India.

For almost 20 years (1922-42) Chakravarti Rajagopalachari served the Working Committee of the Indian National Congress and was the prime minister of Madras Presidency (now Tamil Nadu) from 1937 to 1939.
In June 1948 Rajagopalachari took over as governor-general of India’s interim government, serving until January 1950 when India was declared a republic. He was also the home minister in the central government (1950-51) and chief minister of the Madras (1952-54). He was awarded Bharat Ratna award in the year 1954 for his commendable services to the nation.
